Today we will be covering the topic of hairspray – not the sticky stuff that freezes all your hair into place with a not-so-pleasing, crunchy texture, but sprays you can put in your hair that are targeted towards your specific needs.
What kind of results can you get?
Well, you name it – if your hair is a little too dry, a hairspray can add some moisture, and if you need some texture or definition, there’s a spray for that, too. There is pretty much a spray bottle formulated to answer to any hair problem, and using these in combination with your other hair products, such as your favorite pomade, will make them even more effective. For those who like natural-looking hairstyles, hairsprays enhance texture, definition, etc. while still retaining that natural look.
In this guide we will go over some of our favorite hairspray types and how to make the most out of them.
Types & Uses
Adding Texture
What is It?
Texturizing spray can be used to quickly add some body and grip to your hair, without tacking on weight. Typically sold as a sea salt spray, texturizing spray works by absorbing oil from hair and increasing friction between strands. This is turn leads to more texture.
Texturizing sprays are great for maintaining that unkempt, natural look, and also work for practically all hair types and styles if you just want some more pieciness.
Our Recommendation:
Hairbond Texturiser Professional Sea Salt Spray
Hairbond Texturiser Professional Sea Salt Spray gives you the windswept hair texture you want, while keeping hair light but firm. Not to mention it’s got a great citrusy scent, and offers UV protection to keep hair healthy – an added bonus considering texturizing sprays have a tendency to dry hair out.

Tips & Tricks
- Sea salt sprays in general tend to add more texture when hair is completely dry. If your hair is wet, you’ll end up with less hold, but you can spray it into your roots for more volume, or scrunch to enhance curls.
Adding Moisture
What is It?
Moisturizing spray is the odd one out of the group, since every other spray here is designed in some way to rough up your hair and bring out definition. Not this stuff. Moisturizing spray is designed for anyone with dry and/or frizzy hair.
The spray is made up of an oil base, which helps bring your dry hair under control and eliminates that frustrating frizz once and for all by hydrating hair.
Our Recommendation:
JS Sloane High Gloss Top Coat
Our personal favorite, JS Sloane High Gloss Top Coat, is a high-quality moisturizing spray made with argan oil. It has a very mild, refreshing scent. Use it to add shine and to smooth out any frizzy hairs you may have. This stuff is absolutely great for anyone with dry hair, or anybody looking to just increase shine.

Tips & Tricks
- Can be used with pomade – it’ll turn any pomade into a shiny pomade.
Adding Volume
What is It?
Volumizing spray is the exact opposite of our friend the moisturizing spray, and works a little more like the texturizing spray. Volumizing spray is a good solution for those who want to shampoo less, work out more, or have naturally oily hair.
It works by mopping up the natural oil production of your scalp and hair follicles. This means individual strands don’t get oily and stick together, so you end up with volume and texture. You can get volumizing agents in either a spray or a powder form.
Our Recommendation:
Sachajuan Volume Powder
With added algae-based extracts that provide protein and minerals that build up the strength of your hair, Sachajuan Volume Powder offers a matte hold that lasts all day. This is our favorite pick for volumizing spray.
Shop: Barney’s of New York
Tips & Tricks
- As volume powder acts in a similar fashion to dry shampoo – through stripping your hair of natural oils – it is better not to use the two in conjunction.
- Due to its powder-like consistency and its tendency to wick away moisture, volumizing sprays should only be used on completely dry hair.
Adding Definition
What is It?
Great for those of us with naturally poofy or unmanageable hair, these grooming sprays are designed to add shine and definition to your hair to keep your style in place. These are definitely no replacement for pomade, but they’ll offer some light hold without weighing down your hair too much.
Our Recommendation:
Sauvecito Grooming Spray
Although the bottle recommends using this stuff alongside pomade, Suavecito Grooming Spray works just fine on its own. It offers a low-to-medium strength hold and light shine and smells fresh. This stuff is great when used alone for a relaxed, soft hold, or with pomade to get your hairstyle just right.

Tips & Tricks
- As grooming spray slightly stiffens hair, use it in the morning to set hair in a specific style prior to combing in pomade. Or use it to tame unruly hair.
Curing Bedhead
What is it?
This one may be the odd one out, but we couldn’t not include sprays for combatting this common problem. For those of you who shower before you go to bed, this is the answer to your prayers. Just spray some in and you’ll have that morning hair under control in no time.
Our Recommendation:
V76 Tonic Hair & Scalp
V76 Tonic Hair & Scalp is an extremely light mixture of tea tree oil and juniper oil designed to refresh and rejuvenate both hair and scalp. Just a couple of pumps in the morning will help you to reset your hair to any style you like.

Tips & Tricks
- You can also use this tonic to reactivate styles throughout the day, and to prep for styling.
